six doctoral candidates

for a one year fixed-term position for the period of 1.9.2023-31.8.2024.

Job description

Duties of the doctoral candidate will include preparing a doctoral dissertation in fine arts and pursuing doctoral studies. Under the supervision of a professor in artistic research, the doctoral candidate is obligated to participate in the Academy’s curriculum planning and development, as well as other relevant university activities and to provide teaching.

The doctoral candidates’ posts will be located at the Academy of Fine Arts, as a part of the Doctoral Programme in Artistic Research.

Eligibility and qualification requirements

A successful candidate for a doctoral candidate’s post is required to have a higher university degree or other sufficient knowledge and skills for the studies. A doctoral candidate is also required to have a right to study for a doctoral degree and an approved study and research plan. In addition, commitment to the research plan in doctoral studies is required.         

The applicant appointed to each doctoral candidate’s position must be a doctoral student enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts. Primarily, doctoral students who have been granted the right to pursue doctoral studies in spring 2023 will be selected for the positions. Secondarily, doctoral students who have been employed as the doctoral candidate for a total of less than 2 years and whose doctoral studies have progressed within the target schedule are selected for the positions. In this case, the evaluation takes into account the progress of doctoral studies so far in relation to the latest research plan approved by the supervisors.

Language skills

The languages of instruction at the Academy of Fine Arts are Finnish, Swedish, and English. The person appointed to the position of doctoral candidate may use Finnish and/or English. All applicants are required to have an excellent command of English. Language skills will be assessed in relation to the duties of the post.

Working hours and salary

The salary for the position will be based on level 2 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. The total amount in the beginning of the contract is EUR 2 400– 2 490 with the salary component depending on personal performance. 

The annual workload of the doctoral trainee is in accordance with the collective agreement 1,612 hours. Duties not associated with the doctoral trainee’s own research will not exceed 5% (81 hours) of their working hours per academic year, and consist of specifically agreed teaching and coordinating tasks.

The position requires working in Finland for the duration of the employment relationship. Thus, the assignment requires the doctoral candidate to reside officially in Finland for the duration of the employment relationship.
