Download the template for the written part of your thesis. You can use the anstract page when you complete your written maturity test.
General instructions
On this page, you will find the template for written theses at the University of the Arts. The template is created for Microsoft Word. Depending on the version of Word you are using, some menus and texts may differ slightly from the instructions.
The template includes a table of contents and the styles to be used. It is important that you carefully follow the instructions in the template when adding your content. Otherwise, the predefined structure may break.
Saving and naming the file
Begin writing your thesis by downloading the Word template from this webpage and saving it to your preferred folder.
Name your thesis file like this: Surname_Firstname_20XX.
Do not break the template structure
The structure and styles of the thesis template are predefined. The template is divided into front pages and the actual text content. The front pages include the cover page, abstract, and table of contents. The main text begins with the introduction.
Do not modify the structure, as this may cause the template to malfunction. If the structure breaks, it may be easiest to start again with a fresh template and copy your existing text into it.
Abstract page and table of contents
One of the front pages in the thesis template is the abstract. The abstract page serves as the maturity test for the master’s degree.
Never edit the table of contents manually. Use only the “update field” function.
The table of contents is already included at the beginning of the document. Remember to update it as your work progresses and before printing.
Text formatting and other practical matters
The font and sizes are automatically determined by the predefined styles. Do not manually format the font or its size on the page; always use the built‑in styles.
Page numbering is also preset in the template and works automatically together with the table of contents. Do not modify the page numbering yourself.
The length of the thesis (for example 60 pages) is counted starting from the first page of the main text, which is page 4.
When printing the thesis, make sure that the printout is double‑sided. Double‑sided printing settings depend on the printer and are not included in the template file.
Using and adding images
Instructions for adding images can be found within the template.
Always mention the photographer’s name and make sure that you have the right to use the image. Images used in the thesis must relate to the subject. Always credit at least the photographer and verify copyright permissions. More information about using images in theses: https://libguides.aalto.fi/imagoa.
If you use many images, you may compile the image credits at the end of the thesis.
Important metadata
Before printing or saving the thesis as a PDF, add the key accessibility‑related metadata to the Word file. These include: the file name, the subject, and the file language.
You can edit metadata in the File → Properties menu.
Saving as a PDF file
When saving your thesis, use the PDF/A format, which is suitable for archiving. Read the detailed instructions for saving.
