Call for participation: Sensing the Sense of Common Self
This is a call for participation in a series of 5 workshops conceived and facilitated by Alex Arteaga as “collective and experimental research frameworks” within his artistic research project The Sense of Common Self .
These workshops will inquire into two interlinked sets of research practices: practices of interaction between bodies and environments, and practices of notation through writing and diagraming.
Framed by theories of embodiment (with special attention to the enactive approach), these workshops will be practical: they will inquire into practices through practicing, as a way of conceiving and improving practices collectively.
We are looking for MA students and PhD candidates with an interest in researching bodily interaction as a form of collective sense-making, the sensitive perception of the environment, experimental linguistic varieties of notation, and how artistic research practices can trigger and intensify these processes.
We offer a practice-based, experimental, and collective process of co-creation of artistic research practices, an introduction into specific theories of embodiment, and the possibility of publishing a co-authored article in a peer-reviewed journal such as JAR, VIS, RUUKKU, HUB, or Forum +.
The workshops will take place on March 14th and 28th, May 2nd and 16th, and June 6th from 11am to 3pm in studios of the Theater Academy and the Fine Arts Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki, and in outdoor spaces close to the university.
The number of participants is limited to 10. This workshop series is conceived as a unity in which all participants will research through practicing collectively and come to joint results. For this reason, we ask participants to commit to and participate in all sessions.
