M-building PC classroom will become an acoustic space, students will receive a new calm space

This spring, the facilities survey for students highlighted the need for quiet spaces and consideration of sensory accessibility. You can read more about the survey results in an article published in June. Töölö campus, in particular, also expressed a desire for more sound spaces for artistic work.

Under the leadership of Vice Dean Jenni Lättilä, the Töölö Campus Development Group has reviewed the use of spaces based on student feedback and decided that, starting in August, the PC classroom in M-building will be converted into a sound space that is particularly suitable for teaching acoustic music. PC and Mac work will be combined in the M-building’s existing Mac classroom S5101.

Along with these changes, students will be assigned their own calm space in a slightly smaller classroom S4108.

In addition, efforts will be made to support students’ opportunities for independent work by re-evaluating the furnishings in different spaces. These changes will be revisited later in the fall.

Space S4108 will become The Corner

The solution for room S4108, renamed as “The Corner,” is based on student feedback requesting that students be able to retreat to a more private space during the day to rest or do light laptop work. The purpose of the change is to support students’ well-being and improve their opportunities to relax during the day.

The Corner will be available for students to use Monday through Friday afternoons starting at 1 p.m. and on weekends. Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the space is reserved for teaching.

The Corner will be refurnished to meet the needs of students. At the same time, common ground rules will be established for this new calm space. If you would like to participate in the design of the space, please send an email to jessica.aaltonen@uniarts.fi during August. The design process does not require a significant time commitment, but it is an excellent opportunity to influence the study environment.

PC classroom will become a shared instructional space

During August, the PC classroom will be converted into a large, shared instructional space. Teaching will take place in this space from September onwards, for example, part of the woodwind teaching now situated in classroom S3105.

In addition to acoustic instrument lessons, room S5119 can also be used for small-scale lectures, within the limits of the room’s furnishings. In the future, the room can also be used for the Music Theater programme’s ensemble lessons, for example.

The furnishing of room S5119 is already well underway, and in the future it will feature a grand piano and basic equipment to support musical practice.

The adjacent Mac classroom is currently being equipped for both PC and Mac teaching. The room will be renamed the computer classroom.

Evaluating

The above-mentioned space solutions will be tested during the 2025–2026 academic year. The campus development group will evaluate the effectiveness of the solutions in spring 2026.
