University recommends that you set aside time from courses to answer the Tuudo Feedback Survey
Tuudo course feedback in brief
- Course feedback is a key part of the developing the teaching.
- Uniarts Helsinki consistently collects feedback on all courses with a digital feedback survey.
- Course feedback is collected from the students using the Tuudo Course Feedback System. The system draws information from Peppi.
- Feedback is collected on teaching, learning and teaching arrangements. The Course Feedback Survey consists of numerical statements and three open questions. Teachers can add their own questions, change the timing of feedback collection, give counter feedback to students or create a Midterm Feedback Survey.
- Feedback is given anonymously. However, in small teaching groups, it may be possible to identify the student from the feedback.
- The teacher has the option to give counter feedback on the received feedback. The teacher may also collect other feedback on the course, for example oral feedback, if the teacher wishes.
Tuudo Course Feedback Survey
The University of the Arts’ joint Tuudo Course Feedback Survey was introduced in 2022. In spring 2023, the Survey was extended to include individual courses. The aim has been to harmonise the course feedback and create a unified system. At the same time, the University of the Arts created uniform principles for collecting and processing the student feedback.
As part of the implementation, the functionality of the system has been evaluated by collecting first impressions and experiences of students and teachers. In addition, statistical data from the Tuudo system on response rates and the amount of counter feedback provided have been used.
The evaluation concluded that improving the response rates, communication on the system, training and guidance, and the use of information from the Surveys should be focused on next regarding the Tuudo feedback system.
Reserving time for the Feedback Survey and feedback discussions on the study periods
Students suggested that time should be set aside for answering the Survey at the end of the course, so they would not forget to answer. The University of the Arts therefore recommends that time be set aside for each course to complete the Feedback Survey, for example during the last lesson. Students can use their own smartphones to complete the Survey via the Tuudo app. However, it should not be compulsory to respond to the course feedback.
The University of the Arts also encourages an oral feedback discussion at the end of the course. Giving feedback on the course first with the Survey can serve as a basis for the discussion, so that neither feels disconnected from the other.
The Tuudo Feedback Survey will automatically open for students two days before the end date of the course, unless the Survey has been scheduled to start at a different time, for example earlier on the course. Based on the feedback from students and teachers, the duration of the response time has been extended to two weeks.
It is important to provide counter feedback
Counter feedback is an essential part of the feedback process. It is possible for teachers to give counter feedback through the Tuudo system. Counter feedback can be provided in the Tuudo system for two weeks after the end of the student feedback period. Students have expressed their desire for more counter feedback. This also lets students know that their feedback has been read.
Teachers can also give students written or oral counter feedback, explaining what was highlighted in the feedback and what they intend to improve or maintain in their teaching based on the feedback. The teacher can comment on the course from their own point of view. At the beginning of the course, it is useful to explain how the course has been developed based on previous feedback.
Training, guidance and orientation
Teachers have asked for more training on the course feedback and the Tuudo system.
The Tuudo system will be presented at main teacher forums during autumn 2023. If requested, individual training sessions for the study programmes can also be organised. In the future, the course feedback system will also be better regarded in the orientation of new teachers.
The feedback guidelines for teachers have been clarified and can be found on Artsi. The guidelines contain all the key information on the course feedback system and how it works.
Feedback data as part of knowledge-based management
The unit-specific results of the course feedback will be entered annually in the University of the Arts’ Portal for Knowledge-based Management, starting from 2022. Individual respondents cannot be identified from the aggregate feedback data.
