ANMAtalks – Musicians’ Health – Building a Foundation for Sustainable Careers

In this 14th edition of ANMAtalks, we explore how musicians can build a foundation for a long and healthy career in music and what the role of institutions for higher music education can play in this. In the talk, we will explore both the mental and physical dimensions of a healthy and sustainable career in music.

The session takes place on Wednesday the 21st of June from 10:00 – 11:00 CET on zoom.

Elina Kivinukk, psychologist at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, will give a presentation addressing mental health challenges of musicians. She is also involved with the Estonian think tank Peaasi.ee, which aims to raise the awareness of mental health issues. Having background in psychology and performance psychology and working daily as a psychological counselor with musicians, Elina will provide evidence-based and practical tips, how to support one’s mental health daily.

Some thoughts about the presentation:

  • general wellbeing and how to take care of one’s mental health (incl the importance of sleep)
  • specific challenges regarding mental health in the music field
  • practical tips
  • some words about the habit formation (in case there is time)

Kári Árnason, sports and performing arts physiotherapist and PhD student at the University of Iceland, will give a presentation on the physical aspect of musicians’ health. He is particularly interested in shoulder health, and works as a physiotherapist for the Iceland Symphony orchestra and the Icelandic U20 male handball team.

The session will cover topics such as general wellbeing and how to take care of your mental health, specific challenges for musicians and practical tips.
