Classical Improvisation: when spontaneous creativity and risk-taking meet with structured performance

Professor David Dolan teaches classical improvisation on June 15.

Programme

Part I

Open public workshop – SibA musicians, together with David Dolan, will share the practice & challenges of classical improvisation. This includes risk-taking, music mind-reading and creating music on the spot, while performing, in different stylistic languages – together with partners who don’t have a clue about what’s coming. Members of the audience are invited to participate by providing suggestions and requests. We will also share how we work on repertoire works through improvising on the structural elements of some well-known solo & chamber music works.

Part II

Performance of some of the works workshopped during the 1st part.

Part III

Q&A, open conversation between the audience and the performers.

Sibelius Academy’s International Visitor Programme

The International Visitor Programme complements the regular bachelor’s and master’s studies offered by Uniarts Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy by inviting artists who represent the highest talent level of their respective fields to come and teach in Finland.  The distinguished visiting artists work alongside students and teachers at the Sibelius Academy mainly in periods of one or two years at a time. The programme was realised for the first time in 2019. Some of the visits are organised as a part of the new Sibelius Summer Academy.
