Qualification requirements for educational institutions
Educational institutions have set teacher qualification requirements, which include a higher education degree and pedagogical studies.
Qualification for music and other arts institutions
- In accordance with the extended syllabus, a person with a suitable Master’s degree in the field or a suitable higher education degree or a teacher’s degree of at least a secondary level in the field of art in question is qualified to provide basic education in the arts.
- In accordance with the general syllabus, a person qualified to provide basic education in the arts is one who is qualified as a teacher in the field of art in question as laid down in this regulation, or one who has completed other studies suitable for the field of art in question, or one who is considered to have attained a sufficient degree of competence through their work in the field.
Qualification for conservatories
The teaching of vocational studies included in vocational education and training may be provided by a person:
- who has completed a university degree suitable for the teaching assignment decided by the education provider; and
- who has earned at least 60 ECTS credits (35 credit units) in pedagogical studies for subject teachers; and
- who has a minimum of three years of practical work experience in tasks that correspond mainly to the content of the teaching assignment.
Qualification for liberal adult education (adult education centres)
Liberal adult education may be provided by a qualified person, who holds a suitable higher education degree and has earned at least 60 ECTS credits or at least 35 credit units in pedagogical studies for subject teachers.
Qualification for basic education and general upper secondary school
Subject teaching may be provided by a person:
- who has earned a Master’s degree; and
- who has earned at least 60 ECTS credits (35 credit units) in pedagogical studies for subject teachers; and
- who has earned at least 120 ECTS credits (55 credit units) for studies in the subject of music to be taught and at least 60 credits (35 credit units) for equivalent studies in other subjects to be taught (dual qualification); or
- who has earned at least 60 ECTS credits (35 credit units), which is sufficient for a music subject teacher qualification in basic education and at least 60 ECTS credits in all other subjects to be taught, which is sufficient for dual qualification.
Qualification for universities of applied sciences
- Principal Lecturers must hold a licentiate degree or doctoral degree earned as a postgraduate degree as well as a Master’s degree qualifying them as Lecturers.
- In special circumstances, the post of Principal Lecturer may be filled by a person who has earned their Master’s degree and a person serving as Lecturer who has not earned their Master’s degree, provided that the person has an extensive command of the post in question.
- A Principal Lecturer and Lecturer, whose teaching duties mainly consist of organising vocational studies, is also required to have at least three years of practical experience in tasks corresponding to the degree.
- Before announcing a vacancy for the post of Principal Lecturer or Lecturer in music, the university of applied sciences may decide that the artistic merits required for performing the duties of the post are required from the applicants instead of the requirements specified above.
