Completing orchestra studies
Information on compulsory and optional orchestra studies and their inclusion in your study plan.
The code for playing in an orchestra is S-1034 / Orchestral performance S-IO34 (Bachelor’s and Master’s degree), 1.5–19 cr.
Part of compulsory studies
Playing in an orchestra is part of compulsory studies and is part of each orchestra student’s personal study plan (HOPS). Study units are completed during all periods of attendance, with the exception of the A level study term. Once the compulsory study units have been completed, orchestra playing can be included in the optional studies.
Collection of compulsory study credits
Students play an average of 3 periods per academic year, in which case they accumulate approximately 6 credits of study credits. In addition, there must be on reserve for two orchestra periods. The compulsory study credits for orchestras (at least 12 credits in the Bachelor’s degree and at least 6 credits in the Master’s degree) are mainly collected by playing in S-IO34 Orchestral performance, i.e. the Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra, chamber orchestra and opera orchestra.
For percussion instruments, all credits must be compiled from projects according to the S-IO34 code. String instruments must also collect 2 credits from the opera orchestra. For wind instrument musicians, playing in an orchestra may also include projects in Academy Winds, Academy Woodwinds or Academy Brass.
If necessary and by decision of the Head of Department, it is possible to replace the compulsory credits of the Orchestra course with one of the choir projects of the Sibelius Academy (1–2 cr).
