Temporary security guard arrangements in the Sörnäinen student restaurant discontinued

A security guard hired by Uniarts Helsinki was present in the student restaurant on the Sörnäinen campus on Wednesday 21 October. The guard was hired to inspect customers’ lunch receipts to prevent them from being reused.

The measure was introduced because some restaurant customers have been reusing receipts to avoid paying for their meals. Reusing receipts causes losses to the restaurant and the issue has not been resolved through communications or discussions about the problem.

The intention was to have the security guard be present occasionally in the restaurant for a period of three weeks. Uniarts Helsinki’s facilities services and management received a large amount of feedback from the Student Union and individual students regarding the security guard’s presence in the restaurant. Based on this feedback, a decision was made to discontinue the temporary security guard experiment.

During the autumn term, the vice rector of Uniarts Helsinki and the dean of Uniarts Helsinki’s Theatre Academy will organise a workshop for students who have given feedback about the matter as well as representatives of the Student Union. The aim is to work together and identify ways to reduce long queueing times and receipt-related misconduct while promoting trust, responsibility and a safe atmosphere. Further information about the workshop will be communicated later and all interested students are welcome to participate.
