Theatre Academy students: Apply for University of the Arts Helsinki Foundation Grant by 23 January

The University of Arts Helsinki Foundation Grant for the students of Theatre Academy

The University of Arts Helsinki grants funding for the students. The application period begins on November 28th 2022, and ends on January 23rd 2023 at 4pm. Equal treatment of students from various degree programmes has been considered in the preparation of the principles for funding.

  • Grant is awarded for 100–1000 euros per student.
  • Grants may also be awarded to groups. In this case, the amount of money is 100–1000 euros multiplied by the number of group members.
  • A student may be awarded a maximum of one grant per degree (Bachelor, Master, Doctor). Earlier grant by the dean, unit or degree programme and its worth will be regarded in the decision, if it was granted during the same degree, to which the student now applies funding for.
  • Grants are awarded to support learning and only for activities that produce ECTS credits.
  • Grants may not be awarded on social or health grounds, or for purposes promoting them.

University of the Arts Theatre Academy grants may be applied for by enrolled undergraduate and doctoral students. You may apply for the funding either as an individual or as a group. Chance to apply for the grant is provided once a year around November until January. The grant must be used during the year of the decision to fund.

Criteria

The grant may be awarded for the following purposes:

  • Internships in Finland or abroad
  • Studies abroad
  • Participation in a course, seminar, conference, etc., in Finland or abroad (travel, accommodation and participation costs)

The grant will not be awarded to:

  • Studies abroad funded by Erasmus or Nordplus
  • Subsistence allowances, food allowances, etc.
  • Production costs of artistic work
  • Attending classes, seminars or conferences organized by the University of the Arts itself
  • Retrospectively on projects that have already been completed
  • For an applicant who has received a significant grant from the dean, degree programme or unit during the same degree
  • For an applicant who has received a grant from the University before but has not submitted a written report on its use.

The Foundation has the right to reclaim the grant in full if it has been used for a purpose other than the one for which it was sought or if its use has not been reported. After the funding has been granted, it is possible to change the destination for reasonable rationales (eg. due to the cancellation of the course) by a separate decision of the Foundation representative, by contacting teak.apurahat@uniarts.fi.

Traineeships

The University of the Arts Helsinki, Theatre Academy supports compulsory traineeships and will distribute grants equitably based on the applicants’ funding plans. The grants are compensatory in nature and aim to offset any financial disadvantage related to different circumstances and tasks.

Elective traineeships may also be supported with a grant. Grants will not usually be granted to traineeships in theatres within the scope of the Theatres Act, as the Finnish trade unions in dance and theatre have reached a collective agreement with the Association of Finnish Theatres on trainee salaries.

Studies abroad

Grants are primarily awarded to such studies abroad that have not qualified for another international grant (e.g., Erasmus or Nordplus grants).

Application

The application must state the purpose of the funding, the schedule, and the detailed cost estimate of the project. The funding plan for a student traineeship must indicate the salary or fee paid to the trainee or other aid received by the trainee.

The decisions are made in February – March. The applicants will be informed of the decisions by email.

The Foundation has an obligation to report all the awarded grants to the tax authorities. Read more information concerning the taxation of grants here.

Please note, that the criteria have been updated on 2nd of December. The original announcement stated that the grant will not be awarded for an applicant, who has already received a grant from the dean, degree programme or unit during the same degree. The criterion has now been edited so, that an applicant may be awarded the foundation grant, but earlier grant by the dean, degree programme or unit and its worth will be regarded in the decision.
