Updates from Uniarts Helsinki within the IN.TUNE Alliance in September

IN.TUNE – Innovative Universities in Music & Arts in Europe is a European alliance of eight prestigious universities specialising in music and the arts. Through IN.TUNE, the University of the Arts Helsinki can offer international events, study modules and funding opportunities for both staff and students. We compile current opportunities offered to students and staff within the University of the Arts Helsinki’s IN.TUNE alliance in our internal news feed approximately once a month. New teaching initiatives created through IN.TUNE

IN.TUNE has given rise to a number of exciting new educational initiatives. Five collaborative courses have either already been delivered or will become available to degree students during the current academic year.

  • The online course “Conference Practices”, first delivered last academic year, will return this semester as a collaboration between the Sibelius Academy and the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH).
  • In June, our Music Technology programme hosted a Blended Intensive Programme on electroacoustic performance practices. The course will be offered again as a joint study module in the coming academic year. Watch the video documentary to discover the musical “gifts” participants from across the alliance brought for one another as starting points for improvisation.
  • During the summer, jazz students travelled to Barcelona to participate in a Blended Intensive Programme. Our jazz students also recently used MVTP remote performance technology to collaborate with students and staff at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague. Find out what they learned from the experience and hear their reflections on this innovative form of international collaboration.
  • Later this autumn, students from the Sibelius Academy’s Vocal Studies and Opera programmes will join the IN.TUNE European Choir, culminating in a concert in Paris in January 2027.

IN.TUNE-funded projects for 2026–2027

The following teacher-led projects have received IN.TUNE funding for implementation during 2026–2027:

  • Designing Artistic Futures: Career in Colours (J-P Piirainen)
  • The Horn in Paris in the 19th Century (Tommi Hyytinen)
  • Collaborative Music Analysis Pedagogy (Inkeri Jaakkola)
  • From Archives to Contemporary Practices: Heritage, Research and Innovation in Violin Pedagogy (Yvonne Frye, Cecilia Oinas)
  • Artist as a Teacher (Mari-Anni Hilander, Pia Pajala)

Current opportunities

This academic year, the IN.TUNE alliance is offering a diverse webinar series, with each session focusing on a different theme. All webinars are free of charge and include keynote presentations by experts as well as opportunities for discussion among participants. Topics will range from artistic research in higher music education to issues related to research supervision and doctoral training. Read more about the webinars and registrate to participate!
