Guidelines for submitting thesis projects at the Academy of Fine Arts

These are the guidelines for compiling a thesis project plan and submitting the thesis project for examination.

Follow the below-described guidelines when you want to submit a thesis project for your bachelor’s or master’s degree.

1. Read the guidelines for the Bachelor of Fine Arts thesis project

The guidelines explain how to complete the artistic and the written component required for a thesis project.

 2. Check the deadline for the written component of the thesis project

You must have the written component of your Bachelor of Fine Arts thesis project pre-examined before you can officially submit it for examination. Agree on the schedule for the pre-examination with your teacher or lecturer.

3. Submit your thesis project for examination

You must deliver your thesis project both as a paper copy/printout to the Academic Affairs Office and by email as a single PDF/A file to the address: kuva.opinnaytteet@uniarts.fi. The maximum file size is 10Mb. The file should include the written component in its entirety: the title page, text, images, and a list of references and works cited.

You are asked to submit a notification on the submission of your thesis project at this same time.

3. Compile the thesis project plan and choose a supervisor

In the thesis project plan, you present your overall plan for your Master of Fine Arts thesis project and give the contact information of your thesis project supervisor(s).

Follow these steps before submitting your thesis project plan

  • Discuss who to choose as your thesis project supervisor with your professor
  • Contact the potential thesis project supervisor(s) and ask them if they are willing to take on the job
  • Make sure you have the supervisor’s contact information (their email address and phone number).

Approval of the thesis project plan

During academic terms, thesis project plans are processed within 2 weeks. You will be sent an email to your uniarts address once your thesis project plan has been approved. After this, you are free to use your thesis project grant and receive thesis supervision.

Expiry of the thesis project plan

A master’s thesis plan expires within three years of the date when the plan was approved, unless you have submitted your thesis project for examination. If your master’s thesis plan expires, you must write a new plan with an updated schedule and supervision information, and have it approved by your professor.

4. Choose examiners for your thesis project and fill in the online form

Use the online form (provided below) to notify who the examiners of your thesis project are.

The examiners must be confirmed before the artistic component of your thesis project is exhibited in public.

Follow these steps before filling in the form:

  • Contact the potential examiners and ask them if they are willing to take on the job
