How to apply for the right to continued study
Here we explain what the right to continued study means, how to activate it and what studies you can complete.
What is the right to continued study?
Uniarts Helsinki offers its alumni the opportunity to apply for the right to continued study that is valid during the academic term when their degree is conferred and for two years thereafter. Thanks to the right to continued study, alumni can complement their studies free of charge at the Open University or with selected study units offered by the academy they graduated from.
The right to continued study can only be granted to students who have completed a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree after 1 August 2020. The right to continued study is the right to complete individual study units, not the right to complete a degree.
You can browse the course selection of the Open University in the Open University’s course calendar. More information about the course selection of the academies will be provided on this page later.
Activate your right to continued study
Follow these instructions if you want to activate your right to continued study:
Those who have graduated between 1 August 2020 and 31 July 2021: Apply for the right to continued study by contacting the contact person of your academy (contact information is provided at the bottom of the page).
Students who have graduated on or after 1 August 2021: Inform the academy that you want to activate your right to continued study in the diploma application form.
The right to study will be valid during the academic term in which you graduate and for two years thereafter. Thanks to the right to continued study, you can complete study units that are unfinished at the time of your graduation.
After the right to study has been granted, you cannot postpone or suspend its validity. If you renounce your right to study in writing, you cannot apply for it again.
Apply for Open University studies
You can apply for Open University studies during the registration periods. Check the Open University’s registration periods and application instructions on the Open University’s website. You can browse the course selection in the course calendar.
Open University students are selected to attend courses based on the course-specific selection criteria. The selection criteria (prior studies, letter of motivation, proficiency test, order of registration) are mentioned in the course descriptions.

Apply to complete studies offered by the academies
Graduates from Uniarts Helsinki can also apply for teaching of their home academy or for joint studies that are not available at the Open University.
In the 2022 spring term, graduates with the right to continued study from the Academy of Fine Arts or the Theatre Academy can get in touch with the contact person of their academy and ask which courses they can register for. Starting from the 2022 autumn term, information on these studies will be compiled in Uniarts Helsinki’s study guide and on this page. READ MORE ABOUT THE THEATRE ACADEMY’S COURSES
A graduate from the Sibelius Academy can apply for Sibelius Academy studies to complete an unfinished but already started study unit or study module after their graduation. It is also possible to apply for study units that require group instruction and that are not often available, and the graduate has not been able to complete the study unit for their degree. Even if the decision can be made proactively before graduation, the granted right to complete the study unit or the study module requires that the applicant has graduated with a master’s degree.
You can also browse the selection of joint studies at Uniarts Helsinki. You can send an email to avoin@uniarts.fi if you have questions about registering for joint studies.
All academies process applications on a case-by-case basis. You can submit your application via this form.
