Exhibition and event spaces for students in the Academy of Fine Arts

Guidance on how students of the Academy of Fine Arts can book and use the exhibition and event spaces.

Kuva/Tila

The thematic program of Kuva/Tila consists of exhibitions, discussions, lectures and publications. In Kuva/Tila, contemporary art talks with other fields of art and science. In addition to students, the activities in the space are open to art professionals and the general public.

Kuva/Tila holds 5–6 exhibitions each year: annual degree exhibitions, Kuvan Kevät and Kandi exhibition, and the exhibition of the Praxis training program held every other year. The exhibition program also includes exhibitions of teaching areas as well as exchange and collaboration exhibitions. In addition to the exhibitions that are repeated every year, exhibitions are selected through an open search and by invitation. Kuva/Tila organizes an exhibition application once a year in the spring, when exhibition times can be applied for the following year.

Kuva/Tila consists of a large exhibition space, which also includes a black box.

Tasku

Beside the Kuva/Tila main gallery there’s a smaller exhibition space called Tasku.

Both of these exhibition premises are located on the 1st floor of the Academy of Fine Arts’ Mylly building. The exhibitions are open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm.

Kaiku is a lobby gallery on the fifth floor of Mylly, available for free-form exhi­bition projects, internal Uniarts Helsinki use only. KuvA and VÄL students may organise exhibitions and performances in this space. Kaiku is for internal audiences of the Arts University only, and It is not a venue for public presenting.

Hanging and lighting are done independently. You may request to loan the necessary equipment and basic materials (paint, filler, screws, etc.) from your teaching area’s overseers or Exhibition Services. 

Openings for internal auediences must be organised during Mylly’s regular opening hours and their advertising and communication is the responsibility of the exhibition’s organiser. 

Please note that the roof terrace is not part of Kaiku.

Note! Prohibited in Kaiku: – Hot work, including soldering irons. – Spray paint and other aerosols. – Suspending items on the electrical or lighting rails, luminaires, and sprinkler pipes.

The space can be reserved for a maximum of ten days by contacting Exhibition Services.

Other spaces in Mylly

White studio

The White Studio, located on the 1st floor of Mylly, is used by the Academy of Fine Arts in during degree exhibitions, in Kuvan Kevät and the BFA exhibition, and in December by doctoral students and Research Days. At other times, the space is used by the Theater Academy. The space has fixed presentation equipment, acoustic walls and a wooden board floor, which makes it not customizable like other spaces. In connection with the exhibitions of the Academy of Fine Arts, all stuctural changes are designed and agreed in advance with the main exhibition technician. Reservations only through the production managers of TeaK and KuvA.

Myllyntori and Kohtaamo

Myllyntori is a triangle shaped lobby area in the second floor of Mylly. It is open space for public lectures, course demos, and other events. 

Natural light and artificial light, non-adjustable. Myllyntori has capacity for about 80 people or 120 people if combined with Kohtaamo (obstructed visibility). Current reservations are listed in the Peppi reservation system. Available for events on weekdays between 5 – 9 pm. Reservations are managed by Exhibitions Services: kuva.tuottajat@uniarts.fi. 

A rostrum, large display, dedicated audio equipment, chairs, and tables are available from the AV custodians. All events must be announced (organiser/description and schedule) at least 4 weeks in advance by email to kuva.toimitilapalvelut@uniarts.fi. Make sure that your order is confirmed. 

Note! These two spaces cannot be used simultaneously for two different events! 

Occupants should note that there are adjacent student and staff spaces behind a glass wall. 

The Kohtaamo space on the second floor is part of our public spaces. Its furniture must be kept uniform and orderly.

Majakka project space

The project space Majakka, located on the 6th floor of Mylly, is available as a performance space for the Academy of Fine Arts degree exhibitions as well as teaching course exhibitions. Access to the space is via the 5th floor up the spiral staircase or with a separate disabled lift.

In other occasions in Majakka, you can do artistic work projects and organize workshops and events, of which traces can be cleaned or repaired easily as you leave. Majakka serves the internal use of the University of the Arts. The maximum personal capacity of the space is 30 persons.

Terrace

A 600 m2 open-air roof terrace (50 m2 covered) is located in the 5th floor in Mylly. Available daily on weekdays from the start of May until the end of October. The space’s maximum capacity is 230 people.  The terrace may be used in March and April if the weather and snow permit. The terrace has no winter maintenance for public events except by request. 

The terrace is available for artistic projects, workshops, and events – as long as the organ­isers can clean up and repair everything. 

Note! The space is exposed to the weather (wind etc.). Be careful.

Note! The terrace is also subject to our campus rules regarding smoking and intoxicants. Because the space is part of the building’s exterior, drilling and attaching objects to surfaces is restricted. 

The north end of the terrace has a dedicated 3 x 32 A show equipment power point. For less demanding equipment, the west wall’s recesses have Schuko sockets.
