Completion grant for doctoral researchers at the Theatre Academy

Doctoral researchers who are registered as present at the Theatre Academy can apply for the completion grant.

The University of the Arts Helsinki Foundation will distribute completion grants to doctoral researchers at the Theatre Academy in autumn 2024. The purpose of the grant is to encourage doctoral researchers to complete their research work. The application period is open from October 7 to October 28, 2024, until 4:00 PM. Applications received after this deadline will not be processed. The Dean will propose the grant recipients to the University of the Arts Helsinki Foundation’s board, which will decide on the grants by December 3, 2024. All applicants will be notified of the decisions via email.

Who can apply for the grant?

Doctoral researchers who are registered as present at the Theatre Academy can apply for the completion grant. The grant can only be applied for as an individual.

For what purpose can the grant be applied?

The purpose of the grant is to encourage doctoral researchers to complete their research work. It can be applied for the finalization of the dissertation commentary. The grant is intended especially to cover living expenses and possible language editing and translation costs. A total of 5,000 euros will be distributed to 1-2 applicants.

For what purpose is the grant not awarded?

The grant is not awarded for the costs of the artistic part of the dissertation.

Is the grant taxable?

The grant is generally not subject to income tax. The University of the Arts Helsinki Foundation is a private foundation, which means that the total awarded grants are tax-free up to the annual state artist grant (26,269.46 euros in 2024). The foundation will report the grants to the Tax Administration if the amount paid is at least 1,000 euros. The information will appear on the pre-filled tax return. The grants are considered income for the tax year in which they are paid, and the completion grant will be paid during 2024.

How to apply for the grant?

Send a free-form grant application (max 2 x A4) to Foundation Officer Anni Pokki (anni.pokki@uniarts.fi) by October 28, 2024. The application must include the following information:

  • The applicant is a doctoral researcher registered as present at the Performing Arts Research Centre (Tutke) of the Theatre Academy.
  • The estimated completion date of the dissertation commentary.
  • The amount requested and the purpose of the grant.
  • A work plan with a schedule for completing the dissertation commentary.
  • Justifications for receiving the grant.
  • The application must also include an approved research plan.
