Open call for a student residency at the Seinäjoki unit of the University of the Arts Helsinki
A student at Academy of Fine Arts, Sibelius Academy or Theater Academy – would you like to focus on your thesis? Are you longing for a quiet working space and time? Do you want to perform, but you’re searching for the right space? Apply for a residency organized by the Seinäjoki unit of the University of the Arts Helsinki!
About the residency
During the residency, the artist-student can delve into a new or ongoing project or artistic work. The selected student for the residency will be provided with travel expenses (based on public transportation) and accommodation (Airbnb or similar) in Seinäjoki. There are three available periods during which the residency must take place.
Residency periods:
- 20.5.–2.6.2024 (weeks 21-22)
- 19.8.–1.9.2024 (weeks 34-35)
- 21.10.–3.11.2024 (weeks 43-44)
The length of the residency can be 7–14 days. Please indicate in your application the duration of the residency period that would suit you best.
Additionally, the residency includes a grant of 600 euros, which can be used for purchases supporting your own work. The artist will have access to the office space of the Seinäjoki unit of the University of the Arts Helsinki in Kalevan Navetta and access to the rehearsal space, Kammio, which can also be used as a workspace. Other facilities can be organized according to the artist’s needs. These are to be agreed on before the start of the residency period.
In addition, the artist has to possibility to engage in a small public work in Kalevan Navetta. This can be, for example, open exercises, a short lecture, a small artwork, or a workshop. It’s also possible to focus on a larger artistic output, for example Master’s degree concert.
Application and schedule
The residency is open to all students of the Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki, Sibelius Academy, and Theatre Academy Helsinki. The selection of the residency artist is made on the basis of applications which can be supplemented with interviews if necessary. The choice is made by head of unit Piia Kleemola-Välimäki and specialist Jenni Latva from University of the Arts Helsinki Seinäjoki unit.

The application can be submitted in Finnish or English.
Applicants should provide an application letter (1-2 pages) including:
- Preliminary work plan and cost plan for the use of the grant during the residency period
- A presentation of one’s own artistic work. Include your portfolio or a link to it
- Which length of stay and time would be best for you)
The selection of the residency artist will be announced latest by the first week of May.
Background for the residency
In the years 2022-2023, the Seinäjoki unit of the University of the Arts Helsinki implemented the Kalevan Navetta residency project with the aim of increasing the visibility of the various academies of the University of the Arts Helsinki in Seinäjoki. Now, residency activities are being established as part of the basic operations of the Seinäjoki unit of the University of the Arts Helsinki.
With the residency project the Seinäjoki unit provides students at the University of the Arts Helsinki with a platform for testing and implementing various artistic projects. The residency project works closely with other actors in Kalevan Navetta.
The Seinäjoki Unit provides study opportunities in continuous learning and carries out research and development activities in the field of music and other creative fields. It also organizes concerts, performances and other events. The unit operates as part of the multidisciplinary University Consortium of Seinäjoki. The Seinäjoki unit is in the Art and Culture Center Kalevan Navetta.
