Orientation Programme: Winds, Percussion and Harp

Please take note that in addition to the events of these two weeks, the “Uniarts Helsinki as a learning environment” study unit includes the completion of the online course on Moodle as well as the second orientation day for all new Uniarts students, held on 14 September 2026. 

The orientation period and the Moodle online course are mandatory for new bachelor’s students and recommended for new master’s students. The Moodle online course section “Copyright and the Agreement on the right to use works related to studies” is mandatory for all new students. 

Orientation events recommended for exchange students, too, have been marked with an asterisk (*).  

Monday 17.8.2026 

9:30–16 First orientation day for all new Uniarts students, R-building concert hall* 

  • Presentation about the university’s values 
  • Orientation period as a whole and its learning outcomes 
  • Presentations about Uniarts Helsinki and its academies 
  • Uniarts Helsinki’s Code of Conduct 
  • The Student Union introduces itself 
  • Student tutors introduce themselves and talk about what tutoring is 
  • Programme organised by the tutors/Student Union 

After 16:00, students can join an optional picnic organised by the Student Union. 

Tuesday 18.8.2026 

*10–17 Joint day for wind instruments, percussion, harp and strings.*

10–11:45 Sonore, Starting together, getting to know each other (facilitators Nora Akselin and Matleena Kohonen) 

11:45–13 Informal lunch 

13–14:30 Sonore: Strings department, Nervanderinkatu 13, N-K55: Winds, percussion and harp (Head of department Petri Alanko, planning officer Tiina Tuomikoski and student tutors Dženifera Dinbire-Zujeva, Marika Kostecka and Hilla Ruotsala)

14:30–15 Coffee break 

15–17 Sonore, Orchestral playing, conducted by Petri Komulainen

10–11 Structural Awareness of Music information session, in English: Agora (Music Centre)

10–12 Exchange students’ orientation session, Organo (Music Centre)*

13–17 Orientation afternoon 1 for all new Sibelius-Academy students, Black Box (Music Centre)* 
Getting to know the Sibelius Academy and the new students, community building, first rehearsal of the freshers’ choir, information about facilities, music

9–10:30 Written exam in aural skills, H1112 Auditorium (Music Centre)* 
Target group: bachelor’s students applying for credit transfer of prior studies or prior learning in aural skills, exchange students who wish to participate in aural skills courses 

11:30–13:30 Freshers’ choir: second rehearsal and performance, R-building chamber music hall & concert hall* 
Rehearsal in the chamber music hall and a performance in the concert hall at the University’s staff day 

14–15:30 Written exam in applied analysis skills, H1112 Auditorium (Music Centre)* 
Target group: bachelor’s students applying for credit transfer of prior studies or prior learning in applied analysis skills, exchange students who wish to participate in theory courses
