Jan-Erik Andersson’s career as a sculptor and painter spans more than 40 years, and his work has expanded to include performance, media, and environmental art. The versatile artist’s public works test the limits of building: why can’t houses look like hats, flowers, or leaves?
In his lecture, Andersson will use practical examples to illustrate the role of art and ornament in creating architectural spaces, and the role of imagination and play in creating pleasant environments. We will also hear about collaborative projects with architect Erkki Pitkäranta and sound artist Shawn Decker (Chicago), which have resulted in projects such as the Life on a Leaf house in Turku and Nest installations around the world. The architectural work is part of Andersson’s doctoral thesis at the Academy of Fine Arts of Uniarts Helsinki.
The lecture will take place next to the Life on a Leaf video kiosk on the 2nd floor of Mylly. During the lecture, the audience will have the opportunity to see the work that represents the house project. The lecture will be held in English.
