Transition instructions for Academy of Fine Arts doctoral degree programme students

Transition instructions for students who have started their studies prior to 1 August 2021 and are finishin their degree in accordance with the old curricula.

All students who have started their studies in the doctoral degree programme at the Academy of Fine Arts prior to 1 August 2021 are allowed to finish their degree in accordance with the old curricula by 31 July 2026. All teaching will be organised according to the new curricula from 1 August 2022 onwards. More information about the study units that can be used to substitute for missing studies can be found below.

If the student has completed all compulsory studies included in their degree apart from the doctoral thesis (i.e., the student has completed the doctoral studies in fine arts (70 ECTS) in their entirety) by 1 August 2022, they can graduate in accordance with the old curricula if their studies are valid. If some of the registered study units have expired, the student should discuss their revalidation with their supervisor in charge. The teacher in charge of the subject area in question can then revalidate the registered study units. It is important to ensure that the student’s knowledge of the topic of the studies is up to date when the study units are revalidated.

However, students are also allowed to continue their studies according to the new curricula immediately when they enter into effect. All students who have started their studies on 1 August 2021, or thereafter, will transfer to the new curricula on 1 August 2022.

Including previously completed studies in the new curricula

Students can include all the studies they have completed prior to 1 August 2022 as part of their degree under the new curricula. Students who transfer to the new curricula must also include the following new courses in their degrees: Waypoint seminar (4 ECTS), Exhibition practices of artistic research (2 ECTS), and General research skills (2 ECTS). Below you will find information about which study units in the old curricula can be used to substitute for these courses.

The study units K-Ji-17 (Exhibition practices of artistic research) and K-Ji-18 (Waypoint seminar) can be substituted by additional studies registered under K-Ji-11 (Thematic seminars) or K-Ji-14 (Methodological studies). Alternatives to these study units can be agreed upon with the supervisor in charge/director of the degree programme.

The study unit K-Ji-26 (General research skills) cannot be substituted by previous studies completed at the Academy of Fine Arts, which means that all students who transfer to the new curricula must take the course.
