Pedagogy of composition and musicianship subjects (aural skills, music theory, structural awareness) 2024–25

The department of composition and music theory offers pedagogy courses in composition and musicianship subjects for students of different main subjects. The courses provide students with the opportunity to broaden their pedagogical competence and chances of employment. Music schools are increasingly asking their teachers to integrate musicianship elements, improvisation and composition into instrumental, vocal and ensemble studies.

In the pedagogy of structural awareness of music, the units (1a, 1b, 2a, 2b) may be studied in any order. 1- ja 2-level courses are usually organized each every second year. 1a and 1b courses concentrate on elementary and basic level, 2a and 2b courses on intermediate level or advanced amateur and pre-professional courses. Student from other main subjects than music theory is recommended to discuss with the course coordinator to find an optimal sequence for their pedagogy studies. We recommend that you first study some pedagogy in your main subject, and for the 2-level courses also complete the compulsory bachelor courses in structural awareness.

The courses will include a concise practice teaching period, for which we contact each student in May-June to fix the timetables.

Review of composition pedagogy is available for all students. Advanced composition pedagogy is available for students who have studied composition, and preferably also taken the Review of composition pedagogy course. For practice teaching, see the timetable in the Peppi database. Review of composition pedagogy does not include practice teaching but includes lesson observation.

To apply for the courses, sign up in Peppi system by 22.4. The courses are organized in English if we get several applicants. Further information: lotta.ilomaki@uniarts.fi (pedagogy of musicianship subjects) and minna.leinonen@uniarts.fi (composition pedagogy).
